The process usually follows these steps:
- Examination and discussion. We check your teeth, gums and bite, and ask what you would like to change.
- Photos and video. We take a set of facial and dental photos and a short video of you talking and smiling. Video shows how your lips and teeth move, which a still photo cannot.
- Digital design. Your dentist uses design software to draft proposed tooth shapes, lengths and positions in relation to your face and lips.
- Review together. We show you the simulated preview, explain what treatment it would involve and talk through the risks, alternatives and costs.
- Optional trial. In some cases, a temporary tooth-coloured mock-up can be placed over the teeth to trial the proposed shape, then removed. Ask us whether this suits your plan.
What are the limits of a digital preview?
A digital preview is a simulation, not a guarantee of the final result. It shows a proposed design on a screen, and real treatment is affected by things the software cannot fully predict, such as how your gums heal, the materials used, your bite and how your teeth respond.
Colour, translucency and the fine shape of the final teeth may differ from the preview. Some designs may also turn out to be impractical once the teeth are assessed in more detail, for example if a proposed change would need too much tooth structure removed.
For these reasons, AMK Dental Clinic uses the preview to set realistic goals, not to promise an outcome. If a design looks different from what can realistically be achieved, your dentist will tell you and explain why.
