What should you bring to your first dental visit?
A first dental visit is your first appointment at a practice, or your first visit after a long gap. Packing a few everyday items helps reception and your dentist get started. At AMK Dental Clinic in Mortlake, please bring:
- Photo ID — for example a driver’s licence or passport, so we can confirm your details
- Medicare card — useful for identity and for programs that use Medicare details
- Health fund extras card — if you have extras cover, so we can check claiming on the spot through HICAPS
- DVA card — if you have one
- A list of medicines and allergies — include doses where you know them, plus any supplements you take regularly
- Previous dental notes or X-rays — if you have them, or your previous dentist’s details so records can be requested
- Your questions — a short written list helps you cover what matters to you on the day
You do not need every item on this list for the visit to go ahead. Bring what you have. If something is missing, tell reception when you arrive and we will work with what is available.
New patients also complete a patient information and consent form covering contact details, medical history, medicines and allergies. You can fill it in at reception, or ask whether it can be completed before your visit. If you complete it at reception, please arrive about 10 minutes early. What happens at a first appointment?
A first appointment at AMK Dental Clinic is a planned visit so your dentist can understand your health and your teeth, and so you can ask questions. It usually takes about an hour.
A first visit usually includes:
- Medical and dental history — general health, medicines, allergies and any previous dental care that may affect treatment
- An examination — teeth, gums, bite, jaw and the soft tissues of your mouth
- An oral cancer screening — a visual and physical check of lips, tongue, cheeks and throat for anything unusual
- X-rays, if needed — to show decay between teeth, bone levels or problems below the gum line; your dentist will explain why any imaging is recommended
- A discussion of findings — options, benefits, risks and costs where treatment is suggested, with an itemised written estimate before further treatment starts

What if it has been a long time since you last saw a dentist?
Returning after a long gap is common. You are welcome to book as a new patient or as someone returning after time away. The Australian Dental Association notes that regular visits matter even when you have no mouth problems, and that your dental practitioner can advise how often you should attend (teeth.org.au).
Tell us when you book if you feel anxious, have had a difficult past experience, or have a concern such as sensitivity, bleeding gums or a broken tooth. Your dentist can explain each step before it happens. If you are in pain, have swelling or have damaged a tooth, please phone rather than booking online only, so the team can advise you. You do not need a GP referral to see a general dentist in Australia. If another practice holds recent X-rays or reports, bring copies or ask for them to be sent before your visit.

How do fees and health funds work at a first visit?
We do not list fees on this page. Payment is due at the end of each appointment. If you have extras cover, AMK Dental Clinic can claim from your health fund on the spot through HICAPS, so you pay only the gap, if there is one, on the day. For payment methods, Medicare, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule and DVA, read fees and health funds.
If treatment beyond the first visit is recommended, you receive an itemised written estimate — including item numbers and costs — before that care goes ahead. Please give at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or change an appointment so we can offer the time to someone else. Call (02) 9739 6525 as early as you can.
