What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a traditional or folk habit that involves putting a spoonful of edible oil — often coconut, sesame or another cooking oil — in the mouth, swishing or “pulling” it around the teeth for several minutes (sometimes up to about 20 minutes), then spitting it out. The Australian Dental Association describes it this way on its alternative therapies page (teeth.org.au).
It is not a standard dental procedure. AMK Dental Clinic in Mortlake does not present oil pulling as clinic treatment, and this page does not endorse any oil brand as clinically proven. This is general information only — not a personal plan.
If you are comparing optional extras rather than oil itself, our guides on mouthwash and tongue cleaning cover those habits separately. They are complements, not the same topic.
What do oil-pulling claims usually mean?
Online posts often say oil pulling detoxes the mouth, cures gum disease, kills all mouth bacteria, or whitens teeth. Those claims go beyond solid evidence.
The Australian Dental Association states there are currently no reliable scientific studies to show that oil pulling reduces development of tooth decay, makes teeth whiter, or improves the health of your mouth or body (teeth.org.au). “Detox” language is marketing talk, not a clinical finding you can take to a check-up.
This page does not invent study percentages, brand rankings, or “dentists hate this” headlines. Results people hope for from oil sessions vary, and hopes are not the same as proven day-to-day prevention.
What still does the heavy lifting day to day?
Fluoride toothpaste, careful brushing technique, cleaning between the teeth, and regular check-ups still do the heavy lifting. Oil pulling does not replace them.
Healthdirect advises brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth at least once a day, and seeing your dental practitioner every six to twelve months, or as often as they recommend (healthdirect). Better Health Channel likewise puts fluoride toothpaste and thorough cleaning at the centre of home care (Better Health Channel).
See how to brush your teeth properly. For what a professional clean covers when plaque has hardened into tartar, see what happens at a scale and clean. Mouthwash and tongue cleaning, if you use them, sit as optional extras beside that core routine — not instead of it.
If you still want to try oil pulling, what helps?
Some people still choose oil pulling as a personal habit. If you do, keep the usual fluoride brushing and interdental cleaning. Spit used oil into a bin, not down the sink — oil can coat pipes and contribute to blockages. Do not swallow large amounts of the oil.
The ADA notes it is unlikely you will be seriously harmed by oil pulling, and also notes cases of oil entering the lungs (called lipoid pneumonia) from accidentally breathing the oil in, particularly in people who have trouble swallowing (teeth.org.au). That is a reason to spit carefully and avoid inhaling the oil — not a reason to mock anyone who tries the habit, and not a reason to drop proven home care.
AMK Dental Clinic does not prescribe an oil type, brand or session length. Bring questions to a check-up if you are unsure how oil pulling sits beside your routine.
When do symptoms need a dental visit, not longer oil sessions?
Toothache, bleeding gums that do not settle, swelling, or lasting bad breath need a dental appointment — not longer oil sessions.
Healthdirect links lasting breath problems with a dental check when home care does not settle them, and recommends regular visits even without breath symptoms (healthdirect). Bleeding gums that keep returning also warrant an examination — see bleeding gums: when to see a dentist and bad breath: common causes.
A check-up and clean lets your dentist look at the teeth and gums, review home cleaning, and discuss what you are noticing. If further treatment is suggested, you receive an itemised written estimate before anything goes ahead. This page does not diagnose gum disease, decay or breath causes for you.

Common questions
Does oil pulling replace brushing and flossing?
No. Oil pulling does not replace brushing with fluoride toothpaste or cleaning between the teeth. The Australian Dental Association says there are currently no reliable scientific studies showing that oil pulling reduces tooth decay, whitens teeth, or improves mouth or body health. Healthdirect still puts twice-daily fluoride brushing, daily interdental cleaning and regular check-ups first. Keep that routine even if you oil pull. Ask at AMK Dental Clinic in Mortlake if you are unsure.
Does oil pulling detox the mouth or whiten teeth?
Those claims go beyond solid evidence. The Australian Dental Association states there are no reliable scientific studies showing oil pulling makes teeth whiter or improves the health of your mouth or body. Detox language is marketing talk, not a clinical finding. Everyday prevention still rests on fluoride toothpaste, careful brushing technique, cleaning between the teeth, and check-ups. This page does not promise whitening or detox results.
If I still want to try oil pulling, how should I spit the oil out?
Spit used oil into a bin, not down the sink — oil can coat pipes and contribute to blockages. Do not swallow large amounts of the oil. The ADA notes cases of oil entering the lungs (lipoid pneumonia) from accidentally breathing it in, particularly in people who have trouble swallowing. Oil pulling is optional and not a dental treatment plan. Keep brushing and cleaning between teeth as usual, and ask your dentist at AMK Dental Clinic if you have concerns.
When should oil pulling stop and a dental visit start?
Toothache, bleeding gums that do not settle, swelling, or lasting bad breath need a dental appointment — not longer oil sessions. Healthdirect advises seeing your dental practitioner every six to twelve months, or as often as they recommend, and sooner when symptoms worry you. Book a check-up at AMK Dental Clinic in Mortlake online or call (02) 9739 6525. This page does not diagnose your symptoms.
Is oil pulling the same as mouthwash or tongue cleaning?
No. Oil pulling is swishing edible oil and spitting it out. Mouthwash is a liquid rinse some people use as an optional extra; tongue cleaning is light cleaning of the tongue surface. All three are different habits, and none replaces fluoride brushing or interdental cleaning. See our complementary guides on mouthwash and tongue cleaning. Ask your dentist which routine questions matter for your mouth.
