Prevention & check-ups

Caring for dental bridges

Caring for a fixed dental bridge means cleaning under and around the false tooth (pontic), where plaque and food can collect against the gum. Use a floss threader, superfloss or an interdental brush as suits the space, and keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Book a review if the bridge feels loose, food packs under it, or gums stay sore. AMK Dental Clinic in Mortlake can check fit and show technique. General information only.

What does caring for a fixed dental bridge involve?

Caring for a fixed dental bridge means cleaning under and around the false tooth (pontic), cleaning beside the supporting teeth, brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and booking a review when something feels different. A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a false tooth (the pontic) to crowns on neighbouring teeth, often called abutments (healthdirect; teeth.org.au; Better Health Channel).

This page is about home care for a fixed bridge you already have. It is not a guide to choosing a new bridge, not a price list, and not personal treatment advice. It sits apart from our guides on caring for dental crowns, caring for dentures at home, and interdental brushes, which are linked only as complements.

The Australian Dental Association notes that crowned and bridged teeth can still face decay and that restorations can chip, fracture or need replacement over time (teeth.org.au). How long a bridge lasts varies with daily care, bite load and regular checks; restorations still need ongoing care and may need replacement over time.

Why clean under the pontic?

The pontic sits against the gum where a natural tooth used to be. Because it has no root of its own, saliva and a toothbrush often do not clear the underside well. Plaque and food debris can collect in that tunnel-like space and irritate the gum.

Healthdirect explains that the crowns on a bridge are joined, so ordinary floss cannot pass between them; your dental professional may show you how to clean beneath the bridge (healthdirect). The ADA likewise describes cleaning under and around bridges as part of looking after these restorations (teeth.org.au).

Watch for food packing under the pontic after meals, a persistent smell from that area, or gum tenderness under or beside the false tooth. Those signs mean the underside needs more thorough daily cleaning, and they can also be a reason to book a review if they do not settle.

How should I brush around a bridge?

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Angle the bristles toward the gumline along the abutment crowns and along the sides of the pontic, with careful circular strokes rather than hard sideways scrubbing (Better Health Channel; teeth.org.au).

Brushing the chewing and outer surfaces still matters. Abutment teeth and neighbouring enamel can decay even when the bridge looks intact. Keep fluoride toothpaste going — see fluoride toothpaste: how much and why. AMK Dental Clinic does not promote toothbrush brands.

If the gum beside the bridge bleeds every time you clean, or stays swollen, mention it at a check-up and clean.

How do floss threaders and interdental brushes help under a bridge?

Because bridge units are cemented together, string floss cannot drop between the pontic and an abutment the way it does between natural teeth. A floss threader is a small loop or needle-like aid that pulls ordinary floss under the pontic so you can wipe the underside and the neighbouring surfaces. Superfloss combines a stiffened end, a spongy middle section and regular floss for a similar path. An interdental brush is a tiny bottle-brush sized to pass under or beside the pontic when the space allows (healthdirect; teeth.org.au flossing).

Choose the aid that fits the space without forcing. Light pressure only — do not jam a brush through a tight gap. Our how to floss properly guide covers general flossing technique; under a bridge you still need a threader or similar path. The interdental brushes: when they help post explains sizing for wider spaces as a complement, not a substitute for bridge-specific advice.

AMK Dental Clinic does not endorse brands. Ask which size and method fit your pontic after an examination rather than guessing from packaging.

When should I book a review for a bridge?

Book a dental review if you notice any of the following around a fixed bridge:

  • The bridge feels loose, mobile, or higher or lower than before when you bite
  • Food keeps packing under the pontic even after careful cleaning
  • Gums under or beside the bridge stay sore, swollen, or bleed beyond the first days of a new cleaning routine
  • A rough, sharp or catchy edge appears on the tongue or cheek side
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or biting lingers rather than settling

Healthdirect lists a bridge coming loose and related gum problems among issues that can arise (healthdirect). The ADA notes that restorations can still allow decay and may need replacement over time (teeth.org.au).

Do not glue a loose bridge with household adhesive or file a rough edge yourself. Avoid chewing hard on that side until you are seen. If you wear a removable partial denture instead of a fixed bridge, use the denture care guide rather than this one.

Common questions

What is the pontic on a dental bridge?

The pontic is the false tooth in the middle of a fixed bridge. It sits where a natural tooth is missing and is joined to crowns on the neighbouring teeth (abutments). Healthdirect and the Australian Dental Association describe bridges this way. Because the pontic does not have a natural root, plaque and food can collect underneath it against the gum, so that space needs daily cleaning. Ask at AMK Dental Clinic in Mortlake if you are unsure which part is which.

How is bridge care different from crown or denture care?

A single crown sits on one prepared tooth; you clean the crown–gum join and between neighbouring teeth. A fixed bridge joins crowns with a pontic, so ordinary floss cannot pass between the joined units — you need a threader, superfloss or an interdental brush under the pontic. Removable dentures come out for cleaning. Our crown care, denture care and interdental-brush guides cover those topics; this page is about fixed-bridge home care only. Ask at AMK Dental Clinic which routine fits your mouth.

Do I still need fluoride toothpaste if I have a bridge?

Yes. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Abutment teeth and neighbouring enamel can still decay, and the gum around the pontic still needs plaque removed. Healthdirect and Better Health Channel advise fluoride toothpaste as part of daily teeth and mouth care. An interdental aid cleans under the bridge; it does not replace brushing the chewing and outer surfaces. See our fluoride toothpaste guide, and ask at AMK Dental Clinic how to fit both into your routine.

When should I book a review for a bridge?

Book if the bridge feels loose or mobile, food keeps packing under the pontic, gums under or beside the bridge stay sore, swollen or bleed beyond the first days of a new cleaning habit, a rough edge appears, or biting feels uneven. Healthdirect lists problems such as a bridge coming loose and gum issues among reasons to seek care. Do not glue a loose bridge with household adhesive. Call AMK Dental Clinic on (02) 9739 6525 or use the contact page.

Which cleaning aid should I use under a bridge?

It depends on the space under your pontic and what you can handle comfortably. Healthdirect and the Australian Dental Association note that bridge units are joined, so ordinary floss cannot pass between them; a dental professional may show you superfloss, a floss threader or an interdental brush. AMK Dental Clinic does not push product brands. Ask which size and method fit after an examination rather than guessing from packaging.
